In other words don’t isolate yourself or cut your heart and mind off from others. Instead picture and map out an ever-widening circle of connection to things bigger than or outside of yourself, things that are beyond your self—family, friends, community, nation, the world, the universe, the Divine…
You can connect to the sunshine, the fresh air that blows upon the face of Earth… you can connect to friends, family or loved ones… you can connect to your community by volunteering, connect to causes by contributing. And you can connect to a higher power by cultivating a religious life or a spiritual life without a denomination.
Deep inter-connectedness is experienced not by sight, sound and physical touch alone, it goes beyond the realm of the material world.
You may begin thinking of the connections you have with your family, extended family, your friends… Feel and identify the heart connection with these people and their Liwanag. Shift your perspective from the physical plane and you may perceive a connection between souls…
Pakikipagkapwa or sacred interconnection and a kapwa awareness and practice, can be a life-enriching practice that heals your heart, heals friendships, relationships, families, communities, and even nations and the world.
Connect to a bigger picture.
Stretch your mind and perceive a connection to the cosmos itself.
“A human being is part of a whole, called by us the ‘Universe’ —a part limited in time & space. He experiences himself, his thoughts, & feelings, as something separated from the rest—a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires & to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures & the whole of nature in its beauty.”—Albert Einstein
Stretch your mind even more and perceive a connection to the cosmos itself, and to things that go beyond the sliver of time we exist in… we are connected to things beyond the 4-dimensional pinpoint of time and space…
It is a connection elegance and simplicity that has to do by our mere existence in the Universe… the connection that has to do with how our very consciousness within bodies that don’t just come from the Earth’s atoms, but that come from Universes born within vast expanses of space and time.
Scientists in astrophysics, point out the fact that we are all connected to the greater Cosmos:
“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”
— Carl Sagan, Cosmos
“when I look up at the night sky and I know that yes we are part of this universe, we are in this universe but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the universe is in us. When I reflect on that fact, I look up… many people feel small because they’re small and the Universe is big… but I feel big because my atoms came from those stars.”
— Neil DeGrasse Tyson
“Just think, the University of Life is bigger than all of us. In it, we are each pinpoints of light within a galaxy of souls, not seeing, not aware of the combined brilliance of all our lives and our efforts living on Earth.” Recently posted in Learn. Change. Grow.
But connecting to something bigger is more than an intellectual act, it is an act of the heart.
Picture your soul as a shining light, beautiful and bright as a start, and as you zoom out into the cosmos it might become a tiny insignificant, dot in the velvet, vastness of the Universe. But when combined with the many lights of many souls existing on Earth throughout the ages— the combination of all our lights become a great, galaxy of swirling lights, spinning on its axis, awe-inspiring and breath-taking in its collective beauty, witnessed by angels and a Cosmic Intelligence, God/Goddess/AllThatIs.
Connect to this bigger picture and witness your beauty! Allow something to shift within you so you can flow with the course of greater things taking place within cosmic laws.
“There is a level of connectivity. That’s really what you want in life. You want to feel connected. You want to feel relevant. You want to feel like you’re a participant in the goings on and activities around you. That’s precisely what’s going on, just by being alive.”
— Neil DeGrasse Tyson
The higher your connection to something outside of yourself, the stronger your purpose will be, the stronger you resilience will be to follow through on action for something bigger than yourself, something greater than the sum of your parts.
Connect to a higher purpose.
The higher and broader your connection the more noble and great your purpose and your undertakings and achievements.
Connecting to something bigger than you gives you purpose in Life.
Many people feel small because they’re small and the Universe is big… but I feel big because my atoms came from those stars. There is a level of connectivity. That’s really what you want in life. You want to feel connected. You want to feel relevant. You want to feel like you’re a participant in the goings on and activities around you. That’s precisely what’s going on, just by being alive.”
—Astrophysicist Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Be connected to the inconceivable creative force that brought about the the big bang… cultivate a spiritual life, whether it is in an ancient and old religion or whether it is unbound by institution. What is important that you connect to the Goodness and undefinable, unimaginable, nameless Force that dictate universal physical laws, and the unseen angelic realms in the the heavens, the cosmos and all dimensions.
Playwrite and Pinay.com editor Rogelio Braga pointed out that Nicanor Reyes wrote about Filipinos’ Heritage of Smallness. So for some Filipinos this means that we have an inherent cultural inferiority or that we tend to think, buy small, and live small. So Braga wanted to add to this theme and urge Filipinos to connect to a bigger purpose and envision for themselves bigger goals for themselves. The Philippines may have inherited economic poverty but Filipinos do not have to take on impoverished self-esteem in their national, ethnic, or cultural identity. They can dream of greatness and reach for higher dreams than they ever ventured before.
“People who have meaning and purpose in their lives are happier, feel more in control and get more out of what they do. They also experience less stress, anxiety and depression.”
Stegar, M.F. (2009). “Meaning in Life,” Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology, edited by S.J. Lopez & C.R. Snyder
Connect to a higher force.
A spiritual connection and practice cultivates inner strength and inner beauty.
How you are connected to a Higher Power is your choice– you can be connected with God through religion or through a spirituality that is unrestricted by one denomination.
I inherited this value from my Filipino heritage and matriarchs. I grew up with women and men who had strong faith. My mom and aunts are all devout catholics. My Lola Tilde spoke outloud to God all the time, in three languages. I believe that their prayers and loving thoughts sustain me and our family from afar and throughout the years.
When I was in critical condition being prepped for a cesarean section, I began to worry if I would make it through and as I began tearing up in the prep room, the nurse sensed my fears and squeezed my hand to give me reassurance. Suddenly and gently, I felt my Lola Tilde’s presence with me and immediately felt calm, then the general anesthesia took effect and I lost consciousness. My youngest son was delivered prematurely, but successfully and in full health and that delivery finally ended the serious struggle I was having with pre-eclempsia. The connection I have with both my Lola Tilde and Lolo Pisyong, beyond their deaths, is a very real thing for me.
Most Filipinos are very spiritual, and that makes them very resilient. And Filipinos can very well connect to purposes bigger than just their personal goals. I know that Filipinos can connect with bigger goals that will raise them up. Collectively, Filipinos connecting to purposes higher themselves, goals bigger then their own lives, will indeed raise up Filipino people in the world.
