Drag Queen Manila Luzon Rocks Music World | Pinay.com
New York-based Manila Luzon rose to fame upon joining cross-dressing gay reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race (Season 3) in 2010, where she finished first runner-up. The American reality show is hosted by Hollywood drag personality RuPaul who is in search for America’s drag superstar.
Luzon, 32, Karl Philip Michael Rodriguez Westerberg in real-life, is a graphic artist by day and drag performer by night. She is of mixed heritage, her father is an American mechanical engineer of German and Swedish descent, while her mother is a Pinay chemist.
While she is half-Pinay and is very American in her ways, she is proud of her heritage. She has eaten at a Jollibee store in the U.S. and loves the peach mango pie and spaghetti. “Filipinos like hotdogs in their spaghetti,” says Luzon.
She became controversial for her tragic love story with fellow drag personality Antoine Ashley, a.k.a. “Sahara Davenport,” who passed away at age 27, last Oct. 1, 2012, due to a heart attack.
Luzon has followed up her appearance on the same reality show and graced the recording industry with music video releases of her pop singles Helen Keller, Bring It, Best XXXcessory and Hot Couture, among others and her career continues to soar.
Pinay.com interviewed Luzon recently as she reveals herself.
How did you choose Manila Luzon as your drag name?
I chose the name Manila as a tribute to my mother’s birthplace, the capital of the Philippines. Also because it has “Man” in it, and it has the same number of syllables as Madonna!
How has RuPaul’s Drag Race (Season 3) changed you?
It has really changed my perspective of who I am in relation to the people around me. It has allowed me to grow as a person.
What was it like growing up as a gay bi-racial child in the US?
It’s normal. The US is full of people from different backgrounds.
What is a regular day for Manila Luzon?
Lots of glitter…everywhere.
Who are your favorite icons aside from Donna Summer and Imelda Marcos?
I also like Madonna, Barbra Streisand and Kylie Minogue.
How did you react when you learned of the Yolanda incident in the Philippines?
I felt terrible for the people affected.
Don’t you agree that a new Filipina Miss Universe has long been overdue?
I don’t follow the Miss Universe pageant too closely. Although I think the system strings along the Filipina contestants to gain viewership from the Philippines.
We love your maiden hit single Hot Couture. What else should your followers know about you?
I released Bring It and Helen Keller with Cazwell. Those singles are both on iTunes. You can also view my music videos on YouTube.
