Philippines Independence Day, June 2014 | celebrates the Philippines’ Independence Day or Araw ng Kalayaan (June 12) and Father’s Day (June 15) this month. Read our writers’ take on these two events. The Day of Freedom is an annual national holiday and commemorates the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain on June 12, 1898.

National independence day is usually spent with family, bonding with friends and relatives. During this day, all government offices and schools are closed. As required by law the Flag of the Philippines—first flown on that day in 1898—flies proudly in establishments. Fireworks and patriotic displays are the norm all over the country.  On this special day, a commemorative act with the flag raising at the Aguinaldo Shine and the reading of the Philippine Declaration of Independence is held in Kawit, Cavite.
